Short answer
Before choosing pet insurance, ask what care is eligible, how the policy treats your pet's history, when benefits can begin, what you pay yourself, how claims work and what to review at renewal. Compare the actual policy terms alongside the premium.
Keep your questions handy
Keep these six questions handy when you talk with an agent or insurance company. Write down the answers so you can compare information without relying on memory.
1. What care is included?
Ask which expenses the policy covers and which it leaves out. Get specific about exams, prescriptions, dental care and routine checkups.
If you are also considering a wellness program, request its terms and price separately. Confirm whether it is insurance or a non-insurance program, and identify which benefits belong to which product.
2. How does the policy handle my pet's history?
Ask how pre-existing conditions are defined and evaluated. Find out what records or examinations the insurer needs and how it treats chronic, hereditary or congenital conditions.
If an answer matters to your decision, ask to see the relevant policy language rather than relying on a general description.
3. When could benefits begin?
Request the effective date and any waiting periods in writing. Ask whether different benefits have different start dates and how an issue arising during a waiting period would be handled.
Keep those dates with your policy documents. An inquiry, quote or payment should not be treated as confirmation of a particular benefit's start date without checking the terms.
4. What would I pay, and what could the insurer pay?
Ask about the premium, deductible, your share of eligible expenses and payment limits. Find out how reimbursement is calculated under the proposed policy.
Request a worked example. First identify which expenses are eligible, then follow how the deductible and any reimbursement provisions affect the amount. Compare the full arrangement rather than a percentage or monthly price on its own.
5. How would a claim work?
Confirm whether your veterinarian is eligible, whether you pay the bill first and how to submit a claim. Ask which records are needed and how processing works.
Save the insurer's actual claims instructions somewhere easy to reach. Do not assume that a quote form or a message to the agency submits a claim.
6. What should I review at renewal?
Ask how renewal can affect price and benefits, including treatment for a condition that began during the policy term.
Keep the original policy and renewal notices together. Read each notice and ask about changes you do not understand before making your next decision.
A couple of useful distinctions
Is a wellness program the same as pet insurance? A wellness program can be a separate, non-insurance product. Review its benefits, terms and cost on their own.
Is the lowest premium enough to choose a policy? Consider eligible care, exclusions, your share of expenses, the reimbursement method and limits together.
